CBD OIL FOR DOG THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU TREAT

When most people think of cannabis they think of marijuana – an illegal (in most states) drug that alters the minds of people who choose to use it.  Now, as research continues to emerge, pet parents and veterinarians alike are finding that medical cannabis can provide positive benefits for dogs as well. A growing number of pet owners are discovering the benefits of CBD for dogs, especially their chronically ill companions.

Whether a dog has cancer, seizures, or anxiety, cannabis oil can serve as an alternative medication to help treat symptoms. In this article, I’ll introduce to you everything pet parents need to know about cannabis oil for dogs.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol, a Cannabinoid. Cannabidiol oil derived from the marijuana plant.  (I.E. Cannabis); however, it is not the same as the psychoactive derivative we know as the chemical compound THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), which are glands that have essential oils. Once the glands are separated from the plant, they can be formulated to find the ideal ratio of cannabinoids. CBD is NOT a psychoactive drug; it will not get your dog high.

THC: is the psychoactive compound found in cannabis that people are most familiar with. It’s what gives cannabis its effect of getting people “high”. THC generally comes from plants cultivated to produce more THC.

CBD: has many healing properties but comes without the “stoned” feeling that THC provides because it’s not psychoactive. CBD generally comes from plants that are less cultivated than the high THC content plants.

What Are the Benefits of Cannabis Oil for Dogs?

In human clinical trials, CBD has long been studied for its potential application in various medical fields. It’s been shown that CBD has the ability to relieve inflammation, relieve pain, reduce seizures, reduce symptoms of psychosis, reduce muscle spasms, and reduce anxiety (Kogan et al. 2007; Dialogues Clin Neurosci). So far, the research looks very positive and extremely promising.

In the last few decades, scientists also began looking into using CBD for dogs and cats, examining its health benefits and safety, unlike some traditional pain medicine for dogs,   we’re seeing a lot of news relating to how dogs recover from many diseases, some of which are initially said to be fatal, thanks to the use of CBD products.

The cannabinoids are interacting with the receptors in the body and modulate things like pain, anxiety, and nausea. It doesn’t damage the kidney, liver, or GI tract. The dogs aren’t high or sedated. Medical cannabis has no life-threatening side effects with proper dosage  Hemp products, on their own, contain less than 0.3 percent THC.

Are there Potential Risks of Cannabis Oil for Pets?

There are no known side effects with normal use of CBD oil but Like any medications, overdosing can lead to serious repercussions if your dog consumes too much THC from accidentally consuming human products or pet parents giving cannabis to their dog. An overdose of THC can result in dangerous Static Ataxia with symptoms like;

– Breathing problems

– Lower blood pressure

– Abnormal heart rhythms

– Loss of balance

– Urinary incontinence

Is CBD Legal?

The debates still continue over the use of CBD for dogs, and the views on this are constantly changing. Contrary to what CBD manufacturers may claim,  Most of the pet products that are marketed as CBD for dogs are NOT regulated as nutritional supplements even though they contain little or no tetrahydrocannabinol or THC (the cannabis compound known for its psychoactive effects). CBD is not legal in all 50 US states, and this has been confirmed by the DEA. At the time of this writing, CBD is actually legal in 44 states. If you’re in Idaho, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Indiana or West Virginia, possession of CBD products is illegal there.

Because the laws are regularly changing, always do your own due diligence. The best way to determine whether CBD is legal where you live is to look up CBD LAWS for your state. Some states have laws specific to CBD use and others do not. It is also prudent to have an understanding of the DEA’s stand on CBD for dogs or yourself since this is often at odds with other state and federal regulations.

Is There Scientific Evidence CBD is An Effective Treatment?

Despite the lack of veterinary guidance or canine specific scientific proof, many pet owners are convinced cannabis has improved their animals’ health and well-being based on their own personal observations. Empirical evidence abounds with stories of pet owners who see a real difference in their dog’s spirit. A dog who is no longer in pain is eating & sleeping better, is back to being physically active just seems like a happier dog–like they have a new lease on life. For some pet parents, having their dog back to optimum health is all the proof they need.

ways to Administer Cannabis Oil to Dogs

CBD products are available in many forms from sublingual, oral, topical and even for inhalation. Purified isolate products are also available but because current products are processed from whole hemp plant extracts, pharmaceutical grade injectables are not considered a viable delivery system. The preferred way to administer CBD oil is taking it sublingually, under-the-tongue. You can also drip it on your hand and then have your dog lick it but some dogs do not find the taste pleasing. In this case, you can also drip the CBD oil on a piece of bread or favorite pet treat.

However, more recent research has shown that only a small percentage (<10%) of CBD taken orally in food or edible treats ever gets through the GI tract into the bloodstream. This is cause for concern when you are using small-scale amounts and every drop counts. Notwithstanding, the ineffective gut absorption of orally ingested treats can be a huge waste of your money!

Another form of CBD, nano-emulsified liquid hemp, is more readily absorbed sublingually through the dog’s oral mucosa and is, therefore, a much more bio-active form of CBD. Liposomal Encapsulation (link) of compounds similar to hemp extract has been shown to increase absorption five- to ten-fold. Because liposomes are smaller, more stable, single-layer phospholipid spheres they can bond more easily with cell membranes in the mouth to facilitate intracellular delivery and bypass the digestive processes that normally degrades or limits CBD absorption. The advanced technology behind this groundbreaking liquid delivery method makes for faster, more precise, more effective dosing with the added benefit of immediate therapeutic effects. It takes only a small amount given under the tongue to achieve a medically effective dose.

But herein lies a problem. The research needed to determine the correct dosage for CBD oil in dogs simply hasn’t been done yet. And, to make matters worse, FDA testing has shown that many CBD products contain little if any CBD. The best option available to pet parents at this time is to talk to a veterinarian who has experience with pets being treated with cannabis oil perhaps A holistic vet about proper dosage and reputable manufacturers.

FINALLY

Keep in mind that while CBD for dogs has numerous health benefits, some of which have been proven scientifically, you should never administer it without the approval and guidance of your veterinarian. Overall, CBD hasn’t yet gone through enough rigorous safety testing in canines and we still need more studies on this.
